Who, Why and How

Professional Organization - Low Impact - Cost Effective Events

As company founder and born and bred Cumbrian living on the fringe of the Lake District since the 60’s, Tony has witnessed an enormous increase in the numbers of people seeking outdoor adventure and its resultant impact on a hitherto unspoilt landscape. Finding a sustainable solution to this environmental impact is core to the values of the Eco Challenge team. Gone are the days when Wasdale was a backwater offering walkers peace and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Nowadays, the pathways around Wasdale like so many other parts of the Lake District, are much-trodden by those seeking to challenge themselves in the great outdoors. Certainly, the Lake District economy is largely centred around tourism which creates jobs for local people. However, a sustainable model is required to protect the environment delivering maximum benefit to local business with minimal impact on communities residing in the region. As an outdoor activity provider we feel it is our responsibility to help protect our unique and world-renowned landscape working alongside established like-minded organisations tending to the needs of a busy National Park.

As a fundamental part of this approach our events are organised along strict guidelines and we donate a percentage of every booking to repairing pathways by Fix the Fells teams. Our business model aims to attract like-minded clients who embrace our philosophy helping to protect our beautiful National Park for future generations. For those seeking to raise money for charity we can guarantee an enjoyable experience with minimal impact whilst actively contributing to the economy of the Lake District. For charity fundraisers our message is simple – you can raise substantial funds for charity whilst enjoying an amazing challenge – just remove the blinkers avoiding the national obsession with the 3 Peaks Challenge!

Eco Challenge philosophy

Save our landscape by active participation in funds generation for path repairs

Minimise impact on local communities by sensible planning of events

Zero tolerance to litter and waste deposited on our mountains.

The Team

Tony is the founder of Eco-Challenge and parent company Activus Outdoors Ltd and was born and bred on the edge of the Lake District National Park. He is renowned for his meticulous planning and organisational skills and is involved hands-on in all aspects of the business. A highly resourceful character, Tony is an expert logistics man and is heavily involved in operational planning and support during our events. He is your main point of contact when you make an enquiry and is well qualified to assess the merits of our challenges in relation to the fitness and ability of the group. He has travelled extensively throughout Europe and North America and has mountaineering experience in the Lake District, Scottish Highlands, Dolomites, Slovenia, Canada and North West USA. During the spring, summer and autumn months he is based in Keswick directly supporting our Lake District operations and during the winter months he is generally based in NE Slovenia running the business from the company’s mountain lodge in the Pohorje forest. He enjoys family life and lives with his wife and Border Terrier, Max near Cockermouth and can often be seen walking Max around the backwaters of the Lakes. He cares passionately about safeguarding the beautiful landscape of the Lake District for future generations and has two grown up children and a grandson.

David moved to the Lake District 10 years ago, inspired from childhood memories of family holidays. Growing up on the edge of the Peak District National Park enabled a life fully immersed in the outdoors from an early age, and now holds the highest UK qualification through Mountain Training – the Mountain Instructor Certificate (MIC), along with paddle sport and mountain biking qualifications, and a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors. Feeling lucky to have had the opportunity to both work and play in areas across the UK, Europe, Norway and New Zealand, including having lead high altitude mountaineering expeditions in Tanzania, The Caucasus mountains of Russia, the Moroccan Atlas, the Nepalese Himalayas, and the Tian Shan Range in Kyrgyzstan, he’s passionate about taking people out into the mountains for their next adventure, weather it be part of a challenge event, teaching them to look after themselves, or an overseas expedition. When not working David can be found climbing, biking, and occasionally skiing. Living near Kendal in the South of the Lake District, he enjoys sharing life with his partner and son.

Bernie has lived and worked as a Mountain Leader in the fells of the Lake District for the last 13 years, so offers lots of knowledge of this amazing landscape, and experience of leading tough outdoor challenges over this unique terrain. Outside of work, Bernie is a keen fell runner, and so is well set to understand the physical and mental demands facing participants on mountain challenges. Amongst many competitive races and challenge events, Bernie has competed in over 22 mountain marathon events, and has completed the Bob Graham Round, a running challenge which summits 42 classic Lake District summits in 24 hours. Bernie is also a member of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, who are on call to respond to mountain emergencies throughout the year. In his spare time Bernie enjoys exploring new and unusual routes over the fells and enjoys a bit of reading and cooking so he can make sure he’s well fuelled up for the next day out! He lives with his wife and daughter by the shores of Ullswater, in the North East Lake District.
