Roman Road March Challenge

An amazing journey in the footsteps of the Roman Army

This superb linear journey gives your group the chance to march an ancient section of Roman Road that ascends from the picture perfect shores of Lake Ullswater over the remote and windswept summits of the High Street Ridge before descending via the winding valleys to the town of Ambleside to finish by the shores of Lake Windermere at Ambleside and the ruins of Galava Roman fort followed by a well earned bite to eat and drink in the town.

The crowning joys of this circuit are the remoteness and age old feel of the terrain encountered over the High Street ridge, coupled with crossing between two of the most prominent valleys in the Lakes which has such a feeling of heritage and history associated to it. Countless feet have journeyed over this route throughout its history. You’ll get to see stone circles, ancient marker posts and get a real feel for what it must have been like journeying over this terrain as part of a Roman march.

The challenge is generally completed with one of two approaches; Either a long one day walking event offering a mid-grade challenge completed over a 10-12 hour period with the aim of simply completing the route in good form and in time for a drink or bite to eat in Ambleside, or a more extreme challenge completed at the actual marching pace of the Roman army, which equates to completing the same route but over a timescale of 6 hours. This version of the challenge would require considerable pre-event preparation as we would be completing the route at a strong march, even on the steeper uphill and downhill sections with very limited rest stops. The moorland mountain terrain on this route is relatively straightforward underfoot and so prior experience of mountain terrain is not essential. However, the route is quite committing and remote and so a good level of fitness and ability to walk for long periods at a reasonable rate of progress is a must, as there are limited options for retreat over some of the more open sections of the route. Can you match the speed of the Roman army on this grand challenge route?

We recommend that in the lead-up to this challenge, participants work on building up their stamina with weekly cardio-vascular exercise of a minimum of 1 hour per day, 5 days per week to build up their calf + quad muscles. It would also be beneficial to do at least one training walk if possible on broken rough terrain walking for at least 8 hours. From an average fitness start point it is likely you will need to commit to a 3-4 month fitness training programme to maximise your chance of success. We can help you prepare for this event – for  information about our  pre-selection / training day click here.

Arrival day

Check into your accommodation in Keswick followed by early evening team briefing. Alternatively, we can arrange transfers from Penrith Rail Station.

Second day - Walking

Start: Pooley Bridge, Penrith. Parking, toilets, shop and place to eat/drink available here. Walk up the winding lanes to join the open fell and Roman Road at Roehead, where in good weather you can enjoy a commanding view of Ullswater and the North Eastern fells. From here the terrain changes quickly onto wild and open moorland which we will go further and further over until our final descent later in the day. Pass the ‘Cockpit’ stone circle and start our ascent to Arthurs Pike (532m) and onward to Loadpot hill (671m), High Raise (802m) and Rampsgill Head (792m) before reaching our highest point on the remote and windswept summit of High Street itself (828m). From here, we stay high arcing round to the tower of Thornthwaite Beacon, where if the conditions are clear, we’ll be able to see the distant expanse of Windermere, the Lake District’s largest body of water. From here we descend the winding river valleys toward Troutbeck village and then either skirt the base of Wansfell (482m) or up and over if there is still juice in the legs to complete our final section into the town of Ambleside. As we approach the South of Ambleside town centre and the shores of Windermere, we can stop the clock and stand at the ruin of Galava Roman fort to mark the finish of our challenge and time to have a well-earned drink and bite to eat in one of the excellent cafes and eateries in Ambleside.
