Scafell Pike Challenge

Climb England's highest mountain within 6 hours!

Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England and located in a commanding position in the Central Fells and stands at 978 metres with superb 360 degree views. The summit is one huge pile of boulders set amidst the Volcanic belt of the southern Cumbrian Mountains and this surviving reminder of the mountain’s turbulent past provides the roughest walking on this challenge. Scafell Pike consists of igneous rock dating from the Ordovician period, and its geology is part of the Borrowdale Volcanics. The summit plateau of Scafell Pike and neighbouring peaks, is covered with shattered rock debris providing the highest altitude example of a summit boulder field in England. It is thought to have been caused partly by weathering, such as frost action and possibly earth movement caused by earthquake. Scafell Pike is one of a horseshoe of high fells, open to the south, which surrounds the head of Eskdale. It stands on the western side of the cirque with Sca Fell to the south and Great End to the north. This ridge forms the watershed between Eskdale and Wasdale, which lies to the west. Scafell Pike may surprise walkers with its rocky and rugged paths, becoming very steep and unrelenting towards the top. However, lower paths are well defined with fairly gentle inclines presenting a straightforward approach level off before reaching Styhead Tarn.

We begin at Seathwaite Farm at the end of Borrowdale Valley and have an easy start warming up for the first 15 minutes as we make our way along a farm track to the delightful Stockley Beck Bridge. We make our ascent via Sty Head Tarn before joining the Corridor Route which affords stunning views of Great Gable as we make our way along the western flank of the Scafell massif to Lingmell Col. From the Col we have a short climb to the summit where you can enjoy amazing views in all directions and a wonderful picture looking towards Wastwater – weather permitting! For the return leg we can either retrace our steps or alternatively, return via Broad Crag, Ill Crag and Great End descending Grains Gill to Seathwaite.

We recommend that in the lead-up to this challenge, participants work on building up their stamina with weekly cardio-vascular exercise of a minimum of 1 hour per day, 5 days per week to build up their calf + quad muscles. It would also be beneficial to do a training walk if possible on broken rough terrain walking for 5-6 hours. From an average fitness start point we suggest a 2-3 month fitness training programme to ensure you enjoy the experience. We can help you prepare for this event – for  information about our  pre-selection / training day click here.
