Summer Solstice Challenge

Climb Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw before sunrise!

Our Summer Solstice Challenge involves climbing Scafell Pike in daylight, ascending/descending Helvellyn mostly in the dark and ascending Skiddaw before sunrise. The event finishes on the summit of Skiddaw where you can enjoy commanding views towards Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite, Borrowdale and the Coledale Fells. Scheduled on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st June 2017 the event can also be organised for corporate and private groups on alternative dates throughout the summer.

Our day starts at Seathwaite ascending/descending Scafell Pike via the Corridor Route and or alternatively, we descend via Grains Gill. After a short break we transfer by minibus to Swirls Car Park at Thirlmere from where we make our way to the summit of Helvellyn. Another short minibus transfer takes us to Latrigg car park – 297m and a welcome height gain for our final peak. Our Summer Solstice Challenge is regarded as a tough event which involves walking over varied terrain up to 13 hours.

We recommend that in the lead-up to this challenge, participants work on building up their stamina with weekly cardio-vascular exercise of a minimum of 1 hour per day, 5 days per week to build up their calf + quad muscles. It would also be beneficial to do at least one training walk if possible on broken rough terrain walking for at least 8 hours. From an average fitness start point it is likely you will need to commit to a 3-4 month fitness training programme to maximise your chance of success. We can help you prepare for this event – for  information about our  pre-selection / training day click here.
