The Lake District 10 Peaks Challenge is a fore-shortened version of the 2 day Lake District 24 Peaks Challenge and is based on the day 1 leg of this 2 day event. The 10 Peaks is designed to involve fairly strenuous exercise and for your own safety you must be aware of this and consider carefully whether your general level of fitness, or any particular illness or ailment prevents you from participation. This is a tough challenge that will test your endurance and strength. Set in the stunningly beautiful Lake District you will climb 10 peaks within 12 hours, encountering difficult terrain, lengthy descents and steep ascents along the way. Starting out from Buttermere your first objective is Red Pike and you should be on the summit in around 1hr 20m enjoying stunning views as you climb up through the forest towards Buttermere and Crummock Water and surrounding fells. You will then cover the length of the High Stile ridge climbing to High Stile and High Crag before your steep descent to Scarth Gap – first bail out point if anyone is flagging or picks up an injury. We then have a scrambly section as we make our way to the top of Haystacks with commanding views across Innominate Tarn to your next peak – Great Gable. from the summit of Great Gable you will enjoy a stunning panorama encompassing the Scafell Pike massif and Piers Gill – deepest ravine in the Lake District. We follow a steep descent route over loose rock and scree to the Stretcher Box adjacent Styhead Tarn – for a welcome breather before heading along the Corridor Route to the summit of Scafell Pike. En route you will have a commanding view of Great Gable and from the summit you will see Wastwater and it’s sister peak Scafell. After a short stop we then drop to a saddle before ascending Broad Crag and finally Great End before heading for our final peaks – Esk Pike and Bowfell. By this stage you will be starting to feel the effects of your exertions; however, there is now a final sting in the tail with a 3.5km long and never-ending descent down The Band to your finish point at Stool End Farm.
Rest assured your mental and physical strength will be tested to the max!
Why not challenge yourself and a team of colleagues with this exciting 10 Peaks event which provides an excellent platform for both team building and/or charity fundraising.
We recommend that in the lead-up to this challenge, participants work on building up their stamina with weekly cardio-vascular exercise of a minimum of 1 hour per day, 5 days per week to build up their calf + quad muscles. It would also be beneficial to do at least one training walk if possible on broken rough terrain walking for at least 8 hours. From an average fitness start point it is likely you will need to commit to a 3-4 month fitness training programme to maximise your chance of success. We can help you prepare for this event – for information about our pre-selection / training day click here.
