The Lake District National Park includes four mountains over 3000 feet which can be combined into a challenging event known as the Lake District 3000 Footers. We can structure this event in accordance with the specific requirements of the group; however, it is generally programmed over 2 days walking 6-7 hours each day. Scafell Pike and Scafell are summited consecutively via the shortest route starting and finishing at the the National Trust Car Park at Wasdale Head and we take the most direct route for Helvellyn from Swirls Car Park at Thirlmere. Skiddaw is usually ascended starting at 297m from Latrigg car park, a welcome height gain for our final peak. The Lake District 3000 Footers is regarded as a fairly tough challenge which involves walking over varied terrain and can be structured based on the ability of the group. The event can be completed in 16 hours over a single day – however, a same day approach is demanding ranking highly compared to the National 3 Peaks Challenge.
We recommend that in the lead-up to this challenge, participants work on building up their stamina with weekly cardio-vascular exercise of a minimum of 1 hour per day, 5 days per week to build up their calf + quad muscles. It would also be beneficial to do at least one training walk if possible on broken rough terrain walking for at least 8 hours. From an average fitness start point it is likely you will need to commit to a 3-4 month fitness training programme to maximise your chance of success. We can help you prepare for this event – for information about our pre-selection / training day click here.
These mountains are generally done from Wasdale Valley which requires a 75min road transfer from Keswick to our start point at the National Trust car park at the far end of Wastwater. We firstly ascend Scafell Pike via Lingmell Col and descend to below Mickledore where we pick up the scrambly route via Foxes Tarn to Scafell.
Target time, 6-7 hours, Terrain – Rough mountain paths with loose rock and scree with steep ascents/descents
We ascend/descend Helvellyn from Swirls Car Park above Thirlmere reservoir which offers the quickest route to the summit. After a short break we transfer by minibus to Latrigg where you will set off for Skiddaw.
Target time 6-7 hours, Terrain – fairly good mountain paths including some broken ground.
Duration: 2 Days
Activities: Walking
Suitable for: Private or corporate teams looking for a charity fundraiser, personal development and/or team building event.
Comments: Excellent mid-level challenge for mixed ability groups which also offers fitter teams the chance to set a more demanding time target.
