We recommend that in the lead-up to this challenge, participants work on building up their stamina with weekly cardio-vascular exercise of a minimum of 1 hour per day, 5 days per week to build up their calf + quad muscles. In addition, they should be doing a regular bike ride at least every couple of weeks building up to 50 miles distance circa 4 to 5 hours. We can help you prepare for this event – for information about our pre-selection / training day click here.
Setting off from the end of the Jetty in Seascale, there’s a few metres walk to where the bikes are waiting on the shore. A cycle route using rural tarmac roads, through Gosforth, to the shores of Wast Water.
Distance 13.6km, Ascent 253m, Descent 191m, Target Time 1hr, Terrain – tarmac B roads
Launching onto Wastwater using canoes, we paddle north east along its length to land at Wasdale Head.
Distance 3.5km, Target Time 1hr, Terrain – open water canoeing.
From Wasdale Head we start our ascent of Scafell Pike by foot. Initially following Lingmell Gill, using a stone built path, to the corrie below the historic rock climbing areas of Scafell crag and Pikes crag. Hear a rough path through the boulder field left behind from glaicers takes us to Lingmell Coll, then the final steep climb to the summit of Scafell Pike. From here we retrace our path back to the shore of Wastwater to find our canoes.
Distance 8.5km, Ascent 907m, Target Time 4hrs, Terrain – rough mountain tracks
We reverse the original canoe journey, south west down the length of Wast Water, back to the bikes.
Distance 3.5km, Target Time 1hr, Terrain – open water canoeing.
For our return cycle ride we take a slightly different route back to Seascale. Using the rural tarmac roads out of Wasdale through Santon Bridge and Drigg, to return to the coast and where we started our adventure.
Distance 16km, Ascent 175m, Descent 234m, Target time 1.5hrs, Terrain – tarmac A/B roads
